Jazz Legend Richie Cole Will Join Five By Design On Stage
 |
BIG ARTS welcomes alto sax legend Richie Cole and critically-acclaimed musical group Five By Design this Saturday, January 28 for their Cool & Swingin' concert at 8 p.m. in Schein Performance Hall.
\Combining warm, well-rounded vocals with vintage style and a touch of comedy, Five By Design's signature harmonies have made them a favorite of BIG ARTS audiences. Set in the format of a Garrison Keillor-style radio broadcast, the production touches upon Cole's 40-year career in music from his early days with Buddy Rich, to Doc Severinsen's Tonight Show Band to the present day. A reviewer in All About Jazz writes, "Richie Cole is the last of a breed – A fast and competitive musical gunslinger acquiring legendary status for his willingness to demonstrate his command of Charlie Parker's bebop language by taking on all comers at any speed." Cool & Swingin' runs the gamut from television's I Love Lucy and Johnny Carson's Tonight Show theme, to hits such as What A Wonderful World, a swing version of Almost Like Being In Love and a Latin-style treatment of Night And Day.
The performance also provides a peek inside the Rogue and Jar, the Washington, DC jazz club where Cole penned the classic Harold's House of Jazz and New York Afternoon.

Artists of all experience levels and all patrons of the arts are welcomed to attend this exciting demonstration by this noted artist. Preregistration is not required.
