Sanibel’s Old Bikes Given New Life In Immokalee
The used bikes of Sanibel now have a new home in Immokalee thanks to the generosity of island residents. Over the past month, the island’s second Bike Collection Drive accumulated 150 used bicycles, plus boxes of accessories such as helmets, saddles, kickstands, pedals, baskets and child seats. All were recently delivered to appreciative new owners among the seasonal farm worker community in Immokalee. The agricultural worker community in Immokalee is one of the poorest in the country, and living conditions are difficult for many of the families there. This year’s cold weather has created additional problems, damaging crops and reducing the jobs available for agricultural workers. Immokalee residents have many needs, from clothing to basic household goods, and prominent among the items they need are bicycles, which they use for basic transportation. continued on page 35 |

A Year’s Worth Of Work By Shell Crafters On Sale
It’s Shell Fair time again. The Sanibel Shellcrafters are ready to display and sell hundreds of shells and shell craft items during the annual Sanibel Shell Fair & Show. There are all kinds of critters, figurines, jewelry, ornaments and flower arrangements for which the shellcrafters are famous, all made out of shells. There are beach shells, collector shells and fossil shells, too, all cleaned up and ready for purchase. All of these items will be available for sale in large tents erected at The Community House. The Sanibel Shellcrafters is an informal group of volunteers who meet almost every Monday at The Community House to create crafts from shells. continued on page 18 |
